Thinking about Membership?

As someone considering membership, please think about
these aspects:

  1. How you identify with Jesus and his people, the Church;
  2. How you identify with Cornerstone and the way we do things;
  3. Being willing to serve and share some of the responsibilities for decisions about leadership, direction, property and managing activities, assets and finance.

Reasonable expectations

Membership is about joining us in a venture of faith. It shows
our willingness to build authentic relationships, to work as a
team, to pray together for shared aims, to manage
differences respectfully and to permit trusted people to hold
us accountable for our faith and actions.

Some things members might reasonably expect

  1. Leaders are committed to Jesus and his purposes for the Church, that they be faithful in matters of doctrine and in the care of each member by prayer, counsel and practical help.
  2. Members may grow in Christ and find opportunities to develop their gifts and abilities through service;
  3. Leaders and Board members will manage the finances and assets wisely and allow members open access to the decisions of the Board and the management of accounts;
  4. Every member maintain their relationship with Christ, help in the practical care of others, in financial and practical responsibilities and participate regularly in meetings and activities;
  5. Every member will be an honourable and responsible representative of Christ and Cornerstone in the wider community. (If something happened that might risk the reputation of the membership, we request that you advise pastoral leadership as soon as possible.)

Membership, mission and service

Membership is the formal basis for the appointment of office bearers such as Board Members and key staff such as pastoral leaders, leaders of teams and small groups. Becoming a member then includes being willing to serve in a defined role and for agreed periods of time.

But membership is more about mutual support of every member in their mission in life. Its more about having a real interest in the well-being and fruitfulness of other members in the wider scope of their life than about having a role in the Sunday meetings or other church programs.

Membership is being one body

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Membership and giving

Giving is a private matter between an individual and Christ. Christ intends it as a practical expression of a life of faith and as a way by which He might bless us in this world.

The Scripture is full of examples of generosity and sacrifice and we hold the view that tithing is a timeless principle of faith. We ask prospective members to consider tithing and to come to a position about giving on the basis of Scripture.

Our affiliation

Cornerstone Christian Church is affiliated with the Australian Christian Churches. Affiliation is important because there are some benefits of cooperation such as training, and credentialing ministers, setting and maintaining standards and goals, and ensuring accountability among churches and ministers.

We also respect the whole Church and seek to work in unity with the wider Christian Church, and especially other local churches in our part of Brisbane.

About Australian Christian Churches

The ACC is a movement of Pentecostal Churches in voluntary cooperation. Each individual church is self governing but commits to work together with other churches in the movement for the purpose of mutual support and the spread of the gospel in Australia and the world.

The ACC (formerly Assemblies of God in Australia) was formed in 1937 and has grown consistently, particularly in the last twenty years. It currently consists of more than 1,200 churches with about 275,000 constituents, making it the largest Pentecostal movement in Australia.

In ACC churches you will commonly find enthusiastic people who love the Lord Jesus Christ and express that love in lively praise and worship and caring relationships.

ACC people are Bible loving, evangelical and Pentecostal. It is important for them to share their faith in Jesus Christ (Matt 28:18-20). They believe that God is present and active and will pray with people in need and expect God to do something good.

What we believe

We believe that the Bible is God's Word. It is accurate, authoritative and applicable to our every day lives.

We believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy. We believe that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ as both God and man is the only One who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.

We believe that in order to receive forgiveness and the 'new birth' we must repent of our sins, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and submit to His will for our lives.

We believe that in order to live the holy and fruitful lives that God intends for us, we need to be baptised in water and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to use spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues which is the initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit.

We believe that God has individually equipped us so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives which is to worship God, fulfil our role in the Church and serve the community in which we live.

We believe that God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and prosperous lives in order to help others more effectively.

We believe that our eternal destination of either Heaven or hell is determined by our response to the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.
